How to Make the Most Out of a Small Stage and Stage Lighting

22 Nov, 2019  /  by admin

When you watch a studio-based TV show, you may think that the set used is massive. If you ever visit a TV studio, you’d be amazed by how small the sets actually are. The ‘magic’ used to turn a small TV set into a large-looking one is done by many factors, and effective lighting is one of them.

If you want to put a big production into a small area, then getting your lighting right is essential, as well as a few other elements. Here are some tips on how you can make the most out of a small stage and stage lighting.

Make Sure That The Space Works For You

If you have a small space for your stage, then it is important that you use as much of the space as possible. While it is nice for a production to have expansive areas behind the stage and to each side, with a small space you simply do not have that luxury. You can also bring the audience onto the stage by adding the same decorative elements to the arena as you have on the stage itself.

Don’t neglect the floor

People consider that the stage begins at the point that there is some kind of natural break between the stage and the audience. This can be some kind of raised platform, so if there is a gap between the platform and the audience, then this will reduce your stage area. If you can, try and expand the stage to get as close to the audience as possible. You may not need to use this part of the stage, but it will create the impression of more space.

Make effective use of your lighting options

The best way of expanding your effective stage area is to make the best use of lighting you can. Effective lighting can really make or break a performance – dimly lit stages appear small while well-lit stages appear big. It’s not simply a question of flooding your stage with light though, as the theme and the style of the performance must match the lighting that has been provided for it.

If you are unsure about your lighting, then it is always best to get advice from a team of stage lighting experts. Read Tips for Making Stage Lighting Affordable
