Understand that an Amazing Performance Is Not About You

The success of any performance or speech depends upon keeping your audience engaged and entertained. Great performers understand that in many ways, the show it not about them, but rather entirely about the audience. It’s about making them feel the emotions you are trying to convey on stage. Ask yourself: how can you emphasize your points; highlight the lyris of a song from your own life experience; and physically convey what your words are expressing? Make eye contact throughout the rom, and if you are speaking or performing as an artist, acknowledge their cheers and show your gratitude.

Tell Your Own Unique Story

Great performers are willing to go there and be vulnerable. Being transparent and open on stage allows the audience to connect with you on a deeper level. It sheds light onto your own personal experiences and moves an audience to feel what you’re feeling. Having a great stage presence doesn’t mean you need to be overly-confident, but it means embracing who you uniquely are or whom you are portraying in a play. Remember that the mind follows the body and the body follows the mind, so even if you feel a little afraid on stage, stand tall and breathe normally. A calm body will help relax your mind and help you stay focused on the task at hand. 

Be Passionate

Passion shows. If you are saying or singing something you care about, the audience can feel the emotional connection to your words. Stage confidence or charisma comes from within when a performer truly believes in himself or herself. Know in your heart that after all your many hours of practice and preparation, you are ready to give a remarkable performance, so have fun out there and make it clear to others that you are dong what you love.

Be Brave and Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Don’t second-guess your performance on stage or allow your nerves to get the best of you. Give the audience what they want. Be strong, be confident, be fearless. Know that your stage persona can be different from that which you are off stage, so don’t be afraid to let your creativity and artistry show through on stage.

If you know you have weaknesses you need to work on (which everyone does), identity them and work to address them on an ongoing basis; whether that means taking dance classes or going to open mic nights, practice, practice, practice. The more you reach outside your comfort zone, the more confident you will become. It will require you to fail, but from these failures you will become stronger.
